Mixed Municipal Solid Waste Treatment Enters the 3.0 Era of Intelligent Sorting

Mixed Municipal Solid Waste Treatment Enters the 3.0 Era of Intelligent Sorting

Oct 14, 2026

Mixed municipal solid waste contains a complex mix of residual waste requiring environmentally sound treatment and recoverable resources such as plastics, metals, and glass. As intelligent sorting technologies enter industrial operation, waste management objectives are expanding from reliable final treatment to resource recovery and improved system efficiency.

DataBeyond describes this evolution as “1.0: Landfilling, 2.0: Incineration, and 3.0: Intelligent Sorting,” advancing municipal solid waste treatment toward more precise management and greater resource recovery.

1. The 1.0 Era: Landfilling Provides a Destination for Waste

A treatment model centered on landfilling primarily addresses the need for centralized waste disposal. Proper sanitary landfills require engineered systems for containment, leachate treatment, and landfill gas management to control environmental pollution risks.

This model creates an ongoing demand for land and disposal capacity. Recoverable materials buried alongside mixed waste also face limited opportunities to reenter material recycling loops. Improving resource recovery therefore requires effective sorting before final disposal.

2. The 2.0 Era: Incineration Improves Waste Reduction and Energy Recovery

Incineration reduces waste volume through thermal treatment and can recover part of its energy content, supporting reliable municipal solid waste treatment.

At the same time, opportunities for material recovery remain. When recyclable plastics and other suitable materials enter incineration directly, their material value becomes difficult to retain within recycling loops. Integrating resource recovery before incineration is therefore an important direction for further improving waste treatment systems.

3. The 3.0 Era: Sort First, Recover Resources, Then Treat Residual Waste

The core of intelligent sorting in the 3.0 era is to optimize treatment pathways according to material properties and recovery potential.

After preliminary processing such as bag opening and screening, mixed waste enters the intelligent sorting stage. Recoverable plastics, metals, and glass are separated into individual streams and directed to appropriate recycling channels. Residual waste proceeds to final treatment facilities according to process requirements, establishing a sequence of “upstream sorting, resource recovery, and residual waste treatment.”

Sorted outputs must meet downstream requirements for material composition, contamination, moisture content, and other quality parameters, and must undergo recycling to deliver actual resource recovery outcomes. Coordinating sorting with final treatment creates more opportunities for material recovery while maintaining reliable waste processing.

4. AI Hyperspectral Sorting and Embodied AI Support Integrated Operation

Mixed waste sorting involves challenging conditions, including contamination, deformation, obstruction, and overlapping materials. Equipment must combine effective identification with reliable execution.

AI hyperspectral optical sorters combine spectral and visual information to identify and separate suitable materials. Embodied AI robots connect target recognition, grasping decisions, and motion control to pick and classify target materials. The two types of equipment work together according to their assigned process roles, forming a continuous sorting system. Optical sorting equipment information, Embodied robot application overview

Consistent output also depends on coordination among preliminary processing, material presentation, conveyor timing, and sorting mechanisms. DataBeyond focuses on integrating the entire line so that equipment capabilities translate into practical processing efficiency and recovered material quality.

5. A Project Example: Approximately 35% Waste Reduction and 25% Resource Recovery

At the Liaobu project in Dongguan, jointly developed by DataBeyond and Dongshi Environment, the intelligent sorting line achieved approximately 35% waste reduction and 25% resource recovery, providing a practical reference for resource recovery from mixed municipal solid waste. These figures reflect the performance of the complete project line. They cannot be added together or equated with the sorting accuracy of an individual machine. Results at other projects must be assessed according to incoming waste composition, process configuration, and operating conditions.

For governments and operators, upstream sorting also creates opportunities to reduce transport and final treatment expenditure and generate revenue from recovered materials. Projects should establish downstream recycling channels and record incoming and outgoing material weights, output quality, and final destinations, making waste reduction and resource recovery outcomes measurable and traceable.

As the focus expands from “treating waste” to “recovering resources,” the 3.0 era of mixed municipal solid waste treatment is building a more integrated resource recovery chain. DataBeyond will continue advancing the integration of intelligent sorting equipment and complete processing lines, providing technological support for municipal waste reduction and resource recovery.
