Sorting of Barrier, Fluorescent, and Aged Bottles: Stabilizing PET Flake Quality

Sorting of Barrier, Fluorescent, and Aged Bottles: Stabilizing PET Flake Quality

Mar 09, 2026

Barrier, Fluorescent, and Aged Bottles

In the PET bottle recycling industry, the ability to accurately remove barrier, fluorescent, and aged bottles directly determines the grade and price of the flakes, and even the core profit of the recycling enterprise. However, industry experts know that a lower PPM is not always better; rather, maximizing the yield rate within a controllable range is the real source of profit.

I. Why Must These 3 Types of Bottles Be Removed?

1.Barrier Bottles Mainly used for pesticides, daily chemicals, and high-barrier food packaging, containing barrier layers like EVOH or Nylon. These materials are incompatible with PET melting characteristics. Their presence causes gels or holes in the recycled material, directly downgrading high-value food-grade flakes to low-end materials and causing prices to crash. They are also strictly controlled impurities under food safety standards.

2.Fluorescent Bottles Contain optical brighteners and are common in pesticide and medical bottles. China's food safety standards strictly prohibit fluorescent substances in food-grade PET. Their presence not only prevents entry into high-end markets but also risks returns and regulatory penalties.

3.Aged Bottles Waste bottles subjected to long-term sunlight and high-temperature oxidation, leading to broken molecular chains and yellowed, brittle bodies. Their inclusion increases the yellowness of the flakes and reduces mechanical properties, making them unsuitable for high-end bottle blowing or filament applications, and causing severe fluctuations in batch quality.

II. Core Industry Pain Point: The Dilemma Between Quality and Yield Rate

The PET recycling industry is currently trapped in three unsolvable contradictions:

1.Low sorting efficiency and high investment cost Traditional equipment has limited functions. To remove these three types of impurities, 3-4 machines must be connected in series, significantly increasing investment, floor space, and material loss. Identifying transparent barrier bottles after label removal remains a major challenge with high miss rates.

2.The paradox between quality and yield rate To meet standards, "over-sorting" is often used, where a large number of qualified flakes are removed, sharply decreasing the yield of 3A flakes. Companies fall into a dead end of "quality without profit, or profit without quality."

3.Uncontrollable quality and high business risk Manual inspection cannot avoid missed or wrong detections. Batch fluctuations in yellowness and impurity levels lead to frequent customer returns and claims, squeezing processing profits and preventing stable entry into high-premium markets.

III. DATABEYOND: A 3D Sorting Solution to Break the Deadlock

Sorting Solution

To address these pain points, DATABEYOND has launched the 3D Optical Sorter for Barrier, Fluorescent, and Aged Bottles, utilizing industry-first dual-phase fusion technology of Barrier Spectrum + Fluorescent Sensing.

Core Technology:

●All-in-One Capability: A single machine can simultaneously identify and remove barrier bottles, fluorescent bottles, and aged bottles after label removal. No multi-machine series is needed, reducing investment and material loss.

●Ultra-High Precision: Sorting accuracy is stable at over 98%, solving the miss-detection problems of traditional equipment. More importantly, it can distinguish between "fatal impurities" and "acceptable impurities"—for example, it can precisely allow slightly aged bottles that still meet mechanical standards to pass, avoiding over-sorting.

This equipment brings two disruptive changes:

1.Quality changes from uncontrollable to stable and controllable Precisely grading and removing aged bottles stabilizes yellowness and solves quality fluctuations, ensuring continuous production of flakes that meet high-end standards.

2.Increasing yield rate and directly boosting net profit Moving away from "one-size-fits-all" over-sorting. Under the premise that washing processes meet standards, it allows slightly fluorescent or slightly aged bottles that do not affect final quality to pass, increasing the 3A flake yield by 1-3%. For a plant with an annual output of 10,000 tons, this represents millions in net profit.

IV. The Truth About PPM: "Controllability" is the Source of Profit

PPM

DATABEYOND’s 3D sorting solution not only solves impurity removal but also redefines the industry's understanding of PPM—a lower PPM is not always better; "controllability" is where the profit lies. PPM (Parts Per Million) is a core metric, but many companies fall into the trap of blindly pursuing ultra-low PPM. This leads to stricter parameters and the removal of qualified flakes, causing the 3A yield to drop—quality is met, but output falls, making profits thinner.

The real driver of profit is "achieving the highest yield while meeting downstream quality requirements." For example: If a customer requires yellow flakes ≤2000PPM, meeting that is enough. Tuning parameters to achieve 500PPM might cause 1-3% of qualified bottles to be wasted. There is no difference to the customer between 2000PPM and 500PPM, but that 1-3% loss is your net profit. DATABEYOND’s equipment delivers higher yields because it knows when to "release" materials that don't affect final quality. It allows companies to stop relying on "blanket rejection" for safety and start using intelligent decision-making for efficiency.

As global recycled plastic standards rise, high-purity and high-stability flakes are becoming the core of competition. The winners will not be those who push PPM to the extreme, but those who maximize the yield of every ton of raw material within the quality red line. Through technical empowerment, DATABEYOND helps PET recyclers escape the dilemma of "quality vs. profit," achieving controllable quality, higher yields, and thicker profits.
