China’s First Embodied Waste-Sorting Robot Turns Municipal Waste into Valuable Resources
As policies promoting zero landfilling of untreated waste advance, incineration has become the main treatment route for mixed municipal solid waste (MSW). However, when mixed waste is transported directly to incineration facilities, local governments bear substantial transportation and disposal costs while potential revenue from recyclable materials is lost. Low-value recyclables are particularly challenging: manual sorting is inefficient and costly, and their recovery value often cannot cover sorting costs. As a result, they ultimately end up being incinerated.
The Ecological and Environmental Code of the People’s Republic of China explicitly requires the implementation of waste classification and promotes waste reduction, resource recovery and environmentally sound treatment. The State Council’s Action Plan for Comprehensive Solid Waste Management further sets a target of 510 million tonnes in annual recycling of major recyclable resources by 2030. Waste reduction and resource recovery have become essential requirements.
For local governments, the priority is to reduce the amount of waste requiring paid disposal while generating steady revenue from recoverable materials. Municipal waste transfer stations, which connect collection and transportation with final treatment, are a key point for making this transition.
Databeyond’s Intelligent Sorting Solution
The AI-powered mixed municipal solid waste sorting line jointly developed by Databeyond and Dongshi Environment in Liaobu Town, Dongguan, moves resource recovery upstream to the transfer station. By combining AI-powered hyperspectral optical sorters with embodied robots, the system separates recyclable materials from mixed waste.

The intelligent sorting line can automatically sort 50 tonnes of municipal waste within four hours, with no manual sorting required, achieving a 35% waste reduction rate and a 25% resource recovery rate. Recovered PE and PP films can be processed into plastic pellets or converted into oil, while other recyclable plastics and metals can be sold as secondary raw materials. By connecting sorting with downstream recycling, some materials that would otherwise be incinerated are recovered for further use.
Generating Revenue from Recyclables
For a waste transfer station handling 1,000 tonnes of mixed municipal solid waste per day, a 25% resource recovery rate means recovering 250 tonnes of low-value recyclables daily through precision sorting—approximately 274,000 tonnes over three years.
These recyclables can be baled and sold to generate revenue, while also helping local governments reduce expenditure on waste incineration services by 25%.
Scaling Proven Solutions and Optimizing Project Delivery and Operations
Databeyond has accumulated extensive experience in mixed municipal solid waste sorting. The company has China’s largest urban solid waste database by data volume and has introduced a range of first-of-their-kind products in China. These include China’s first embodied waste-sorting robot, China’s first AI-powered hyperspectral optical sorter for plastic films, and China’s first AI-powered hyperspectral optical sorter for waste textiles.
Its waste-textile optical sorter was also named one of TIME’s 100 Best Inventions, alongside innovations from Unitree Robotics and DeepSeek.
Beyond its projects in China, Databeyond has implemented mixed municipal solid waste reduction and resource recovery projects in countries and regions including the United States, Italy, Australia, Eastern Europe, India, Japan, South Korea and Mexico, building extensive experience in delivering integrated sorting lines.
Databeyond provides end-to-end turnkey services, covering site surveys, solution design, equipment supply, installation and commissioning, project operations and after-sales service.
